Carnival in Rio is a one of a kind experience, one of the world's most spectacular events! From Saturday to Tuesday, we have our official Holiday with parades and celebrations all over the city.

The Main Parade (Sunday, 14th & Monday 15th, 2010)

A championship where 14 Samba Schools compete against each other - takes part at the Sambadrome (Samba Stadium) on Sunday and Monday. During this 2-day championship each samba school gets rates according to their performances (songs, costumes, harmony, dedication etc. are judged). The results of the championship are published on Wednesday.

Besides the Samba Schools, there are also celebrations on the streets and Carnival balls at clubs and discos. It's easy to feel like a part of the party here. Brazilians are a very warm and receptive people. They're used to the influx of tourists every year for Carnival.

The Winner´s Parade (Saturday 20th, 2010)

For those wanting a taste of Rio's famous carnival but without the five solid days of all consuming dancing and celebrating, a visit to the "Winners' Parade" which takes place the weekend after the main carnival parade is an excellent option. By this point the city is returning to normality; people are back in their offices and banks have reopened.

The parades that take place over this weekend feature the winning samba schools from the carnival, each of approximately 3,000 dancers and musicians and every bit as colourful as the carnival parades themselves.

Travelling to see the Winners' Parade can also be a more enjoyable experience than the carnival as the city's roads are less congested, queues to its tourist attractions such as Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf Mountain are shorter and the hotels have mandatory packages of 2 nights rather than 4 or 5.
