Modern Brazilian architecture can be defined as “an important chapter for us to understand architecture in the 20th century”, with innovative methods of production becoming internationally recognized since the ‘40’s. Rio played a prominent role in this production. Starting with the projects by modern Cariocas, the movement gained expression through the country. People such as Oscar Niemeyer, Lucio Costa, Afonso Eduardo Reidy, the Roberto brothers, Jorge Moreira and Sergio Bernardes, among many others, began building a series of works in Rio in the ‘30’s which contributed to the definition of its urban features. Their works were explained as being “the fruit of their exuberant surroundings” or “result of the inheritance of a Baroque colonial architecture with great plasticity”. Come see for yourself and find your definition for the Brazilian Movement. Extension to Brasilia, chosen as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its modernist architecture and uniquely artistic urban planning. The landscape architect by Roberto Burle Marx.
